The first step is to discuss what kind of wedding you want to have. Some couples have a small, intimate ceremony in mind while others want a big, extravagant event. Often couples come to a compromise that meets both their expectations for the ideal wedding. Announcing the engagement is another important step you want to take soon after the accepted proposal. The time you will need to put together your wedding depends on the type of wedding you want to have. A small wedding can be put together in six months or even less, whereas a large affair may take a year or more.

The engaged couple will want to decide upon a wedding date, which will then make it possible to hire professionals such as the caterer, florist, photographer, DJ and the officiant. A traditional wedding includes bridesmaids, a maid (or matron of honor,) a best man, a flower girl, a ring bearer and ushers, all of whom are chosen by the bride and groom. For a small ceremony you may not need any of these. In today's modern society, a wedding can be exactly how you want it to be. If you want the cheapest, easiest route possible, marry at the Justice of the Peace office and throw a reception party for friends and family afterwards.

For weddings that do require professional services, begin scouting locations and searching for florist, caterers, DJs, photographers, etc. as soon as possible. If you find someone you like and want to hire, it is wise to book them as soon as possible to ensure they will be available. Other parts of wedding planning include choosing a bridal gown, selecting wedding colors and decorations, planning a rehearsal dinner, and of course the bridal shower which is usually planned and held by the maid of honor.
